I want to become a society lady Rockin' a new rock?!

Izolda and Razvan’s Italian wedding is filled with old-world romance. The intimate celebration at Villa Le Due Torrette was planned by Fairy Italy and focused on the comfort and enjoyment of the family and guests. As with most Italian Villa weddings, the decor is built in and the team of vendors including florist FioriGraphia kept the details to a minimum introducing a just a sprinkle of lilac and lavender hues. The bride’s Berta gown and  cathedral length veil are a total show-stopper and we’re loving all the portraits of the couple on the grounds captured in the images of the day by photographer Slava Mishura.

What made the wedding special and unique?

A special atmosphere was created by the chamber format of the wedding. It was a family celebration, where everyone met and talked to each other, and we were able to devote time to each guest. Many guests afterwards noted that there was a pleasant feeling that the celebration was organized for them. Chambery has created a very pleasant and comfortable atmosphere for everyone.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I found the dress in Italy, wedding salon “Le Spose Di Milano”. This was the second dress that I tried on, after I tried a few more but I did not want anything else and I did not go to any other salons. For fitting in Milan, I came from Monaco (where I lived) with my friends. The girls were crying during the fitting. Unfortunately on this day with me there was no mom. But my mother was able to come to the last fitting and she was very excited during it. And at that moment the first time I realized that I’m getting married, this is when I wore a dress and a salon employee dressed me with a veil. It was an extraordinary moment!

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

Little details, which we thought through with wedding planner, were very memorable to the guests. Little gifts, mirror seating chart, colors we used, dress for my girls, bow-tie for the guys. All details are joined together.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The most memorable moment of the wedding for me was on my way out with Dad. He came to my room. We went down the stairs and I saw the two of us in the mirror. I started crying. And of course the moment with Razvan, when we stood during the ceremony. It seemed to us that we were alone together and there was no one around. The moment of our unity.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

This is very funny, because the first unofficial proposal I received by phone. At that time we lived in different countries and Razvan really wanted me to move closer. I took the offer by phone as a joke. Usually, we saw each other once a month and the next time I came to Amsterdam, I already guessed that he had prepared a ring for me. On the day of my arrival, we went for a walk. There were a lot of people in the city. But knowing that he is very shy and will not make the proposal in a public place, every time we were alone (in the garden full of bloomed sakura, on the Ferris Wheel on Dam Square), I always thought “Well, now!” Every moment turned out to be wrong and in the end, I was tired of thinking about it. We were in a public park and watched the ducks. At some point, he said “Look!” pointing to the family of ducklings. I turned away to look, and when I turned back to him, he was already holding the ring in his hands.

Despite the fact that I was waiting for this moment all day, it was unexpected!

Tara and Adam took the reigns on their own wedding planning and—with some help from our friend Instagram—they perfectly customized their Hampton’s nuptials at Wolffer Estate. As luck would have it, it rained on the couple’s big day, but they “were determined to still embrace the beyond gorgeous vineyard setting which meant walking through the rain (and a little mud!)” Rain-or-shine, Tara and Adam’s day is lovely and their extensive vendor research paid off with beautiful paper by Sesame Letterpress, gathered florals by Roses & Rice and photography by Alexander Thomas who perfectly captured the serendipity of the rainy day in these images.

What made the wedding special and unique?

First and foremost the location was very special to us as we have spent a lot of time together as a couple in the Hamptons and we both have childhood memories of Eastern Long Island.  One of our earliest trips together as a couple was New Years 2015/2016 that we spent out there … this was actually the weekend we “fell in love” and knew we were going to marry one another (even though we didn’t tell each other that weekend, ha!).  We spent New Years Day 2016 drinking champagne at Wolffer Estate, it was perfect.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

The dress was from an up and coming French wedding designer Rime Arodaky.  Tara has worked in the fashion industry for 10+ years and never wanted a traditional style wedding dress.  After living in Paris for a short period of time, Tara holds all things French near and dear so when she came across Rime on a blog she knew she wanted to wear something from her collection.  Tara only went to one dress shop (The Mews showroom) and tried on 3 Rime dresses.  It took about 15 minutes and Tara instantly knew this was the dress.  She loved how it looked like a skirt and top … and the buttons down the front felt incredibly sophisticated and vintage.  It made her feel like the “bride” in a cool, laid-back, elegant way.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

Everything!  Honestly Wolffer Estate hosts a lot of weddings (they are booked every weekend May, June, September and October) and has a long list of preferred vendors to work with … but we wanted it to feel like “our” wedding and not just another wedding out in the Hamptons.  So we spent a lot of time in the Instagram “black hole” researching vendors that looked and felt like our vibe starting with the photography and then followed by the flowers.  We did not have a wedding planner so every detail was our own.

Some of the personal highlights were the letter pressed coasters on everyone’s place setting that Tara’s mom individually wrapped with ribbon the week of the wedding and the laser cut menus hand crafted by a family friend.

Perhaps the best touch was the guests’ welcome bags … Tara used to work for Outdoor Voices and all of the guests received a pair of sweats in their welcome bag that many wore to the Sunday brunch (including Tara, Adam and Tara’s dad!) as well as a box of famous Tate’s Southhampton cookies.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

This is a tough question … the highlights include our vows that we wrote (Tara almost had a teary meltdown!), the speeches from Tara’s father, Adam’s brother and Tara’s best friend, and both of our parents crushing the hora.  We would both agree though the most memorable moment was walking from the Wolffer House (where we stayed with family) through the vineyard to the estate.  As luck would have it, it rained on our wedding day … but we were determined to still embrace the beyond gorgeous vineyard setting which meant walking through the rain (and a little mud!) to the wedding.  Good thing Tara ordered 20 large white umbrellas the week of the wedding … they look amazing in the photos :)

Coming full circle, we along with about 30 of our friends walked back to the Wolffer house after the wedding through the muddy, wet vineyard with nothing but the moonlight guiding the way.  The evening ended with us all jumping in the pool (Adam in his wedding gear!), drinking champagne and eating lots of pizza.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

We met on Bumble!  Funny enough Adam “extended” our match since it was about to expire and Tara had not messaged him within the 24 hour period (so many rules!).

Adam proposed about 15 months after we first met in Tribeca on a side street near the Greenwich Hotel.   Tara used to live in Tribeca and her parents still do so it is a place near and dear to her … Adam wanted it to be a surprise so he told Tara they had lunch reservations with a work colleague at Locanda Verdi (the restaurant in the hotel) although instead of having the cab drop us off in front, Adam stopped the car on a side street and popped the question.  We then went over to the hotel for the evening to celebrate and have a ‘staycation.’  Since both of our parents live in the city, they each came over to celebrate the big day.

Lindsay and Brad loved the idea of a destination wedding where friends and family spent an entire weekend getting to know one another. With Palm Springs as their chosen location, Stone Eagle Golf Club was a natural choice of venue with it’s spectacular mountain views. Lindsay loves neutrals and settled on a palette of blush, mauve, maroon, deep purples and grays and planner COJ Events implemented the pared-back hues in fabulous fashion. A casual elegance underlies the design in the both the outdoor ceremony and garden reception and florals by Arrangements Floral and Party Design are spilling from every detail. Stationery is by Union Street Paper, cake by Exquisite Desserts and it’s all captured by Birds of a Feather Photography.

Why did you choose Palm Springs/Desert Area as your wedding destination?

Brad and I really wanted a destination wedding. We loved the idea of our friends and family spending a few days together and really getting to know each other. Zika quickly limited our options, as we loved the idea of hot and sunny location! Palm Springs came to mind as it’s such a manageable destination and a lot of our guests had never been; it seemed perfect. Also, I loved the idea of being able to quickly fly down from SF for any wedding meetings; it made the planning process so much easier.

About 12 years ago, when I was working at Merrill Lynch, I assisted with an event at Stone Eagle Golf Club. From that day forward, that venue always stuck out in my mind. If you’ve been there, you know why. The views are spectacular. The venue sits upon these amazing mountains, and it is extremely unique. When we started looking I knew we had to check it out. And bonus, they had just redone the restaurant where we had cocktails and the reception, which is completely stunning. We spent a full day in Palm Springs venue hunting, and Stone Eagle was our last spot to check out. The minute we walked in, we knew. It really takes your breath away. We really wanted a unique venue, something different. And Stone Eagle was just that. You also get to head up the mountain in these sporty Jeep safari vehicles (the guests loved it!).

What colors/themes/diy/handmade elements did you include on your wedding day? How did COJ help?

I love neutral tones and my favorite season is fall so I tried to marry those two for the overall theme/color palette for the wedding. Blush, mauve, maroon, deep purples, greys also some greenery. My bouquet was this amazing airy and wispy creation with lovely fall neutrals of wild flowers, roses, dahlias, and anemones with a cascading nude ribbon. The bridesmaids had a smaller version also with a ribbon, I loved the look the neutral ribbons. I wanted the boutonnieres to be succulents; I thought it was such a cool way to bring the desert to the wedding and they looked so sharp against the tuxes.

One of my favorite elements was the escort card display. As my venue is not traditional, there was no clear separation between cocktails and dinner. We decided to use the escort card display to divide the two areas. Luna, at Arrangements (who is a genius) said she would create something with linen/drape and velvet ribbons. Seeing her work before, I trusted her but also had no idea what this would look like. It was STUNNING. It was DREAMY. We loved it so much we ended up moving it as the photo booth backdrop after dinner.

Tell us about the dress and how/where you found it!

I’ve loved fashion from the moment I was born and was extremely excited when it came time to look for the dress. However, I had no idea what I was looking for. I did not have a real vision in mind, but there were a couple details I had to have: lace, a deep v and something unique. I had almost finalized on this beautiful long sleeve lace number when my girlfriend and I spotted this whimsical fairy tale dress that had butterflies (never thought I would end on a dress with butterflies!). She said, “Try it on for fun”. So I did, and that was it. My dress was the Francesca Miranda Aurora dress. It’s a-line with a deep v. It has embroidered silk butterflies and Swarovski crystals sewn on the bodice. The details are one of a kind. It also has a gorgeous French lace underskirt with layers of Italian tulle on top. It was romantic, and perfect for Palm Springs. However, I customized it. I wanted the tulle removable so I could experience that princess bridal feeling and also something a little sleeker. I also opened up the tulle in the front so you got more of a glimpse of the stunning lace skirt. I wore the tulle for the ceremony and cocktails.

It was a lot of dress so I opted for no veil and minimal jewelry. I wore a simple pair of diamond studs, one of the diamonds was from my great grandmother’s engagement ring, very special. I also wore my mom’s diamond tennis bracelet, which my sister also wore on her wedding day. For the shoes, I also knew they had to be simple, but I wanted some sparkle, obviously! I went with Stuart Weitzman Nudist (in the tallest heel!), in platinum lame. The best part of those shoes, I have worn them many times post wedding.

What was your favorite part of your wedding day?

Our favorite moment was cocktails (seems crazy) but that was the first time we could let loose, say hello to our friends and family and really start enjoying the evening as a married couple. The setting was perfect, a cotton candy sunset on top of a mountain with 110 of our best friends and family (with great music and bacon wrapped dates). We loved scanning the crowd and seeing the mixing and matching of guests. Brad’s family talking to Lindsay’s friends and vice versa. Those moments are so special to us and we will always remember it.

How did you fall in love and become engaged?

Brad and I were set up by mutual friends in February of 2015. To be honest, neither of us had high expectations as set ups had not really worked for us in the past. We met at a popular bar in Santa Monica named The Bungalow with a small group. It was an instant connection. We both thought we would end up leaving early that night, however we wound up closing the bar down at 1:30am. The following weekend we spent a weekend in wine country. In August of that year, Brad was offered a job in San Francisco. Taking a big step, he asked me if I would move with him. I said yes and the rest is history.

Brad and I dated for about a year and a half prior the proposal. The proposal happened in Split, Croatia. It was the 2nd night of our 12-day trip. We stayed in the cutest boutique hotel called Villa Split; it only has 9 rooms. Brad had asked the owner to decorate our room with some flowers and add some champagne while we were out at dinner. We later walked back into the room and were greeted with flowers everywhere, champagne and a heart made out of rose petals and chocolate on the bed! I was still clueless and thought it was just a sweet gesture since we had a very nightmare travel experience getting to Croatia. Brad said “I have one more surprise”. He pulled the ring out of his suitcase, (which is another story in itself, almost getting caught with it going through security) got down on one knee and said, “Will you have my babies and marry me?” (yes in that order!).

It was the best night. I was extremely surprised, which I loved. I think that is the best way to get engaged, when you have no idea it’s coming. I couldn’t believe he brought a ring (my dream ring) all the way to Croatia. We were on cloud nine and about to embark on our first international travel experience together for another 10 days. Couldn’t have been better!

What advice do you have for future brides and grooms?

A few pieces of advice…Do not start planning the wedding right after you get engaged. If you have the luxury to have a long engagement, enjoy those first two months and just glow in your happiness. We loved those first few months just celebrating and enjoying life as an engaged couple. Next, EXAMPLES are your friends. When you are researching vendors, have them send examples, so many examples. Do not feel bad about asking for multiple examples. Full photo albums, full wedding videos, florals from previous weddings, etc. They are so helpful in nailing down your favorite. Instagram is a great place to look too! Also do not rush into decisions, if you start early you can take your time and feel 100% about your decision. Last piece, you do not need your photographer that late on the actual day. If you are working with a certain time limit, have them arrive early and leave early (no one wants professional photos past 9:30pm, trust me). Oh and one more, let it all go that weekend. Have fun, take it all in and enjoy it. Fastest weekend of my life, but also the best weekend of my life.

Amanda and Adam knew most of their loved ones—dispersed around the country—would be hopping a plane to their wedding regardless of location, so the couple fully embraced the “destination wedding” concept and threw a long weekend bash in Los Cabos. The couple enlisted Amy Abbott Events to create the celebration of their dreams. With the help of fabulous vendors, tropical accents, personalized details and TONS of florals, the team transformed Flora Farms into a lush garden affair with twinkling cafe lights to cap it all off. Photographer duo Chris & Lynn were on hand to capture all the magic in these lovely images.

What made the wedding special and unique?

With Adam’s family in California, and my family in Michigan and Texas, we knew that most people would need to get on a plane in order to celebrate with us. So, we decided to fully embrace the idea of a destination wedding! Cabo was an easy decision. My parents are owners at Esperanza, so we are down in Cabo a few times a year. Baja California has become a place near and dear to our hearts, and we couldn’t wait to share it with our family and friends! We actually decided on Flora Farms as our wedding location even before we were officially engaged!

To us, it was important that our wedding was more than just one day. From our experience, a wedding is a total whirlwind and blur – not just for the bride and groom, but often for the guests too! We wanted to make sure we had ample time to celebrate and spend time with the most important people in our lives.

So we thought: Why have a one-day wedding when you can have a four-day wedding weekend extravaganza?! With the help of our incredible wedding planner, Lynette Dow with Amy Abbott Events, we planned four days of events for our guests… So much planning and details went into the four days of events, we sincerely could not have done it all without Lynette! She was a true lifesaver and miracle worker.

We kicked things off on Thursday with a private catamaran sunset cruise with Tropicat. Our guests were able to mingle and get to know one another, while soaking in some of the most beautiful sights of Cabo, including The Arch. On Friday, the day before our wedding, we hosted a Mexican Fiesta on the beach at Esperanza – complete with a mariachi band! From there, we enjoyed an elegant dinner overlooking the ocean, on Esperanza’s “Seaside Terrace,” with an incredible saxophonist and fireworks to cap off the evening!

Most of our guests attended all four days of events, which meant that by the end of the weekend, strangers had been transformed into close friends. There was no distinction between “Adam’s family” or “Amanda’s family.”  This closeness and energy was so apparent at our wedding – it was truly magical.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

The gown is Jenny Packham. (2017 collection, Style: ‘Nashville’) The dress was absolute perfection. I felt like a million bucks wearing it. And it was ridiculously comfortable.

When it came to wedding dress shopping, I was incredibly spoiled since we live in New York City – all of the best salons and designers are right here. My mom, sister, and best friend flew into NYC from every corner of the country – Michigan, Texas, and Minnesota – for a weekend of dress shopping. Little did we know, we would find the dress on the very first day!

The gown was exactly what I was looking for, down to every detail. I knew it was “the one” as soon as I tried it on. We found it at a bridal salon right near our apartment – Gabriella New York Bridal Salon, in Soho. Bonus: Gabriella was having a Jenny Packham Trunk Show, which meant a 10% discount!

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

There were so many personal touches throughout the day… In particular, every aspect and detail of the wedding ceremony was incredibly personal to us. It was important that our officiant was someone who knew us extremely well, both separately as individuals and together as a couple. The decision was easy: my sister’s husband and our brother-in-law. To us, Jeff was the obvious choice – beyond being one of the most important people in our lives, he is funny, articulate, and well-spoken. As a former trial attorney for the Department of Justice, we knew Jeff could easily command the crowd. We did not have a Plan B or back-up choice, so we were extremely relieved when he agreed to officiate! With Jeff we designed and wrote our entire wedding ceremony, start to finish. It was an incredibly time-consuming process, but also an incredibly powerful experience. In the months leading up to the wedding, Adam and I would sit together at a neighborhood coffee shop on the weekends, working on the ceremony. It was a unique opportunity to verbalize and solidify our definitions of love and marriage.

There were several personal touches throughout the ceremony, including:

Our Parents:  First, it was important to me that both of my parents walked me down the aisle. During the ceremony, I wore my mom’s wedding garter, and a piece of my mom’s wedding dress was wrapped around my bouquet. Additionally, we asked both sets of parents to join us at the front during the ceremony for a “Parents’ Affirmation.”

Ring Bearer Trucks: Our two nephews (my sister’s boys) were our ring bearers. In the months leading up to the wedding, Eli (4) and Ezra (2) made it known that they would not go down the aisle without trucks. So, with the help of a DIY blog and a very crafty person on TaskRabbit, we found two classic metal Tonka dump trucks, sanded them down, took them apart, repainted them, and put them back together! This was not an easy task – we found out the hard way that current day Tonka trucks cannot be taken apart. So we had to track down two classic trucks on eBay. But the end results were beyond worth it… The dump trucks were transformed from a garish bright yellow to a soft bridal white – a much better fit for the aesthetics of our wedding! And the boys loved the trucks! (They took them home with them from Mexico.) We put rose petals in the back of the dump trucks, and the rest is history…. The boys completely stole the show!

Hand-Selected Readings: We didn’t want just the typical, cliché wedding readings that you tend to hear at every single wedding. The two readings we selected were incredibly meaningful to us – for us, the readings were a way to make a statement as a couple about our shared set of values and beliefs. The first reading was an excerpt from the majority opinion from the Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality, written by Justice Anthony Kennedy. The second reading was a love letter written by Johnny Cash to his wife, June Carter, on her 65th birthday (after more than 25 years of marriage).

Vows: Since we wrote our entire ceremony, it was only fitting that we also write our vows. While many couples opt to write their own vows, separately, we wrote our vows together. We decided together what promises we wanted to make to one another and of course, we agonized together over every single word choice. It was so meaningful and powerful to recite the vows we had written together to one another during our ceremony. Amanda: For better or worse, I can’t help but concentrate on every single little detail! Every decision was made and every details was selected with a great deal of care, thought, and purpose… From the local, handcrafted avocado soaps from Santo Cabo in the bridal party gift bags to the vintage, mid-century, Mexican sterling silver cufflinks I tracked down on Etsy for Adam as a gift on our wedding day. To me, the magic of our wedding was in these small, thoughtful details and personal touches.

Adam: Adam is more of a “big picture” kind of guy. But he got all into the details when it came to the music! Music was an integral and personal part of our wedding, from start to finish, with several meaningful songs throughout. We selected a string trio for our ceremony – comprised of Daryl Currie and Cabo Strings. Adam entered the ceremony to “In My Life” by The Beatles. I walked down the aisle with my parents to an instrumental version of “Latch” by Disclosure – a meaningful song to us that came out in 2014 when we first started dating.

We found an amazing Cabo-based band, The Currents, to perform during our cocktail hour, dinner, and first dances. Our first dance was to “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison. Thanks to dance lessons we had been taking in New York, we surprised the crowd with a beautifully choreographed dance… complete with two lifts! Neither of us are particularly coordinated or rhythmically inclined, so this was a big deal for us! And to keep the dance party going, we transitioned from live music to DJ Alex during the reception. Adam worked closely with DJ Alex on the playlist, which was incredible – the dance floor was packed all night. The dance party was a whirlwind – there was even an impromptu conga line! The last song of the night was another meaningful song to us, “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

It’s impossible to pick just one… In many ways, so much of it was memorable. And in other ways, so much of the day was just a complete blur! A few stand-out memorable moments:

Morning Coffee / Vow Writing: We woke up early on the morning of our wedding and sat outside on the balcony of our villa at Esperanza – drinking our morning coffee, and looking out over the ocean as the sun was rising. It was truly magical. And it was so important to have a few quiet, peaceful moments together before the chaos and craziness of the day began! And of course, since we both tend to save things until the last minute, we still had not yet finalized our vows… We had been working on them over the previous weeks, but had been agonizing over word choice, length, etc. We couldn’t seem to finalize our vows. But that peaceful moment provided much-needed clarity – suddenly, it was so easy to finish our wedding vows that morning. It was truly a magical way to start our wedding day.

First Look: We’re so glad we opted to do a “first look” before the ceremony. We did our first look at Esperanza, in a beautifully lush and tropical part of the property. It was so private and intimate. We were both so excited, we were grinning ear to ear. I was shaking, Adam was speechless.

Little Moments of Humor & Levity: It was important to us that our ceremony was heartfelt and meaningful, but not too sappy. I really, really did not want to cry! There were a few much-appreciated, unplanned little moments of humor and levity that continue to be the things that stand out most in our memories. Most notably, our nephew Eli interrupted our ceremony in the most adorable way possible. He decided he wanted to go dig in the dirt with his dump truck. So he nonchalantly walked up to me, handed me his precious lovey (“Brown Owl”), and said “Here, hold this” before running off with his dump truck. (I ended up throwing “Brown Owl” to my mom, who was sitting in the front row.)

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Adam and I met in February 2014 on Match.com – the true OG of online dating, before the countless dating apps like Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble became ubiquitous with dating in New York. Adam had recently moved to NYC from LA to get his MBA at Columbia. I was working 80 hour weeks at an advertising agency. Without Match.com, our paths likely would have never crossed.

Neither of us believe in love at first sight, but it was as close as it gets! Our first date was perfection, even though I was 45 minutes late and broke a glass! By our third date, Adam had basically moved in! We ended up living together in a 500 square foot studio apartment for almost a year – and more importantly, we didn’t kill each other!

We got engaged about two years after dating, in early 2016. Adam managed to surprise me with a proposal in Washington Square Park – complete with our friends, massive balloons, and a photographer to capture it all! That said, I might be the hardest person in the world to surprise… As he fell asleep that night, Adam whispered: “This was the best – and worst – day of my life. I will never surprise you again.”

Sheela and Joe wanted their wedding “to feel like a giant dinner party with our closest family and friends.” Sheela also happens to be a food writer, so cooking and food experiences are a favorite pastime of the couple. Needless to say, the bar was set high and Piccolo delivered the dinner party of their dreams at Portland’s The Barn on Walnut Hill. The event is filled with garden party details and farm-inspired florals by Broadturn Farm. Emily Delamater was behind the lens and she captured it all in these stunning images.

What made the wedding special and unique?

Sheela: I lived in Italy for awhile and quickly fell in love with the food and the relaxed style of dining there. Since I also happen to be a food writer and cooking and sharing food experiences are two of our favorite hobbies together, we really wanted our wedding to feel like a giant dinner party with our closest family and friends. It was exactly that and then some. We can’t tell you how many times people told us that wedding food is always an afterthought and it will never be as good as we actually wanted it to be, but it was that and more. We loved that people were as excited about the food and drink and company surrounding it as we were — and that we ate more at our own wedding than we have at any other wedding! Piccolo blew us always with their ability to deliver the dinner party of our dreams and we will always be so thankful for that.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

Sheela: The gown is Truvelle, a boutique designer based in Vancouver, Canada. I stumbled upon them on Pinterest and immediately fell in love with their modern yet classic design that’s feminine and whimsical. There are only a handful of shops in the U.S. that carry their gowns and luckily there was one near my apartment in Brooklyn. The dress I chose felt like it could have been made for me — it was so airy and effortless, with really thoughtful touches. Plus, it was the most comfortable gown ever — I didn’t want to take it off at the end of the night!

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Sheela: There are too many to count! Though I’d have to say the ceremony itself stands out the most. We asked my aunt and uncle to marry us — I am incredibly close to both of them and they’ve been married for almost 60 years. They’re as in love now as they were the day they got married and having them bless us and start us on our journey as husband and wife together couldn’t have been more special. We also wrote our own vows, and while there was so much trembling and tears, I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Joe: We hate to say we met at a bar but, well, we met at a bar, as wing-people for our two friends who were on a sort of casual first date after meeting randomly a few nights earlier. Sheela’s friend dragged her with her because she had met the guy late at night at a bar and wanted to ensure he wasn’t completely crazy upon meeting him the second time. She came as her back up plan in case he actually was, in which case she could casually say they needed to go, ha! I came a little later. One, to let my friend spend more time with Sheela’s friend without her, and we quickly hit it off and spent the rest of the night talking and getting to know each other. We exchanged phone numbers and went on our first date a couple of weeks later.

I proposed 4 years later. Sheela had been away for the weekend and I told her I’d take care of dinner the night she got back. As we were just finishing our meal out on our balcony, I reached into my pocket and immediately she thought it was an engagement ring, which was exactly what I hoped she would do. What she didn’t know was that I had a special pair of earrings custom made for her, and this was what was in the box. I said that “I just missed you this weekend and wanted to give you something special.” What she didn’t know was that I still had a little bag in my pocket that contained the ring. In order to not seem obvious, I told her I had to use the bathroom, which would allow me the opportunity to take the ring out of the bag.

Once I got back outside to the balcony and sat down, I started telling her the story of how the earrings were made. I told her that the earrings were actually made using her mom’s engagement ring band, and then proceeded to pull out the remainder of the ring (the diamond) on a newly mounted setting and asked her to marry me.
