I want to become a society lady Rockin' a new rock?!

Two comedians meet at an open mic at the Silverlake Lounge. They both remember the mic, remember noticing each other but didn’t start dating until three years later. Seven years after that open mic, Christian proposed to Emily and they were married at  the Annenberg Community Beach House. The venue boasts an ocean view and offered a ceremony on the sand. DIY details and a retro 60’s vibe dressed the event which concluded with a smashing floral-topped cake by Lark Cake Shop. But, the most important part of the day were their children. Luke and Milla, 12-year-old twins that Emily was lucky enough to inherit when they were eight, were their maid-of-honor and best man. Mandee Johnson was on hand to capture the family’s love and all the delightful moments in her signature journalistic style.

From the photographer: They starting dating in August so it only seemed right to tie the knot in the same month. It’s also the same month Emily was born so it’s just a good month all around. Being close to the water was high on the list and the Annenberg Beach House allowed them an ocean view with a ceremony on the sand. But, the most important part of the day were their kids. Luke and Milla, 12-year-old twins that Emily was lucky enough to inherit when they were eight, were their maid-of-honor and best man. It was so fun to have them by their sides and they couldn’t have pictured it any other way.

The wedding itself was a DIY affair. Pulling the color palette of beach shells and metallic for the bridemaid dresses accented by brighter 60’s and sunset pops in the floral. The florals were done by a dear friend and comedian Susan Burke. Emily and Susan got all the ladies together the day before the wedding to assemble the table arrangements and bouquets, making each one a labor of love with a special memory. They filled the room with childhood pictures and created a guest book out of an old typewriter and some loose paper. Emily also turned an old mirror into the escort board for table assignments.

Most Memorable Moment: The most memorable part of our wedding for both of us was when we realized we had forgotten to exchange rings as the ceremony concluded, and the band started to play our march off music and how hard we laughed. Christian realized first but it took a while for his voice to travel over the beach to the band so it was one of those slow, “Bampf, bermf, bawwwmpch…” stops where the singer’s still singing. Nobody knew if the tears were from crying or laughing – that feeling is probably what we’ll remember most.

Advice: Go with your gut. No matter how chill you are, there are a lot of decisions to be made and it’s a new emotion. Especially the guest list. That process is impossible. Just enjoy each other and breathe. Have all the fun, savor everything you can, it’s the greatest day and it goes by so fast.

MusicProcessional: Please Please Please, Let Me Get What I Want (by the Smiths but The Dream Academy arrangment) performed live. Recessional: The Battle of Evermore by Led Zepplin performed live. First dance: Baby by Donny & Joe Emerson then we danced with the kids to Home Again by Michael Kiwanuka. Our reception music was mostly 60s soul until after the dances, then it progressed through the decades and ramped up to super danceable hip hop to close it out.

Kate and Jeff’s wedding at Boulder’s St. Julien Hotel was the destination wedding the couple dreamed of—a stunning, scenic location with travel accessibility to their dearest family and friends. Self-proclaimed “professional wedding guests,” the couple knew exactly what they wanted in a reception—an ideal seating layout where each guest had a great view. With the help of their planner Banks & Leaf , there was no bad seat in the house—a house decked out in elegant details and stunning florals by Statice Floral Design. Lucky for us, Callie Hobbs Photography captured the day with her signature style in the beautiful images below.

What made the wedding special and unique?

It was special to us to have destination wedding that was in an accessible location. Boulder was a perfect choice, especially since we had a lot of friends that were pregnant at the time. A destination wedding also has a different vibe since everyone was treating it like a vacation.

Our wedding was on the smaller side, with 80 people, so it was imperative to Jeff and I that all of our guests felt included in every aspect of the weekend, especially at the reception! We’re basically professional wedding guests, and have experienced a few weddings where all the friends were sat at a large round table in the very back of the room, where it was hard to see or hear what was going on. When we had our final head count confirmed, we went back to the St Julien layout to rearrange everything a few weeks before the wedding. Jeff and I scoured Pinterest, along with every wedding magazine and website, to look at layout options. We fell in love with a U-shaped layout from an outdoor wedding, the only thing was we had to make it fit in the room at the St Julien. During our final walk through we worked with Gabby and multiple staff members at the St Julien, walking through different options and taping off measurements, making sure no one would have a bad view and while also trying to optimize the layout for the servers. It was so stressful at the time, but on our wedding day it paid off in spades. Looking around the room during the toasts, speeches and dances, everyone was engaged and best of all, we could see every person’s face! Looking back, it was one of the best decisions Jeff and I made!

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I went into the dress searching thinking I wanted an ethereal, bohemian wedding dress. I tried on a bunch that I really liked but wasn’t necessarily in love with. I was in Denver for Thanksgiving and decided to make an appointment at LWD. It was one of the first ones I tried on. I remember thinking my mom wouldn’t like it for some crazy reason. Then when I came out of the dressing room she started crying! Since my family is just a bunch of group criers my sister and I both started crying and it turned into one of those cheesy but touching moments that I look back on.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

Jeff’s mom’s side of the family comes from Guatemala, so it was important to us to incorporate his heritage into the ceremony. His grandmother did the second reading, doing it first in Spanish then followed by English. It was beautiful. We also incorporated arras (wedding coins), which is a Spanish tradition where the groom gives the coins to the bride followed by the bride giving the coins to the groom as a symbol of marriage and commitment to each other. We also incorporated El lazo which was essentially a large rosary in a figure 8 that was placed on our shoulders during the ceremony, symbolizing everlasting love and unity. Multiple guests came up to us at the reception and the brunch afterwards, commenting how much they loved how we personalized the wedding.

We weren’t able to bring our dog out to Boulder so my step-dad surprised us with a life-size cut out of our dog, Mowgi! Jeff was so surprised and absolutely loved it since they are best friends. He also made an appearance in wedding guests’ photos.

For our guest book we worked with Simon Pearce since we wanted a unique guest book. They helped us pick a large vase that could be engraved. My stepmom decorated the paper for guests to sign. All of the guests wrote well wishes on the paper that was then sent to Simon Pearce to be engraved.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

I could never choose just one memorable part of the day! One of my absolute favorites was at the ceremony, when the doors opened and I walked down the aisle looking at Jeff. I was experiencing so many emotions, I could not stop smiling.

Just being surrounded by so many people you love is a surreal experience. I still remember that feeling. I will remember that for the rest of my life!

In the car on the way over, Jeff’s sister led us in yoga breathing ending with OM before we walked out of the car. The calmness carried through the entire ceremony.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

My stepmom actually introduced us! I had just moved back to Chicago from the east coast after a break up and was living with my sister when my stepmom texted me saying, “don’t kill me but I told one of executives we work with about you. He’s TALL!!!” He then messaged me on LinkedIn. We finally met up at brunch a few months later and were inseparable since then.

I was in no rush to get married, I actually didn’t want to get married. One Friday after a friend’s birthday party, he told me he had a surprise. Jeff is a very carefree person, so I assumed it was something small, like a piece of jewelry or my favorite type of wine. When he called me in the other room, I walked over and there were flowers EVERYWHERE and he was waiting there on one knee. I instantly started crying and made him walk me through all of the details of how he got here before saying yes. Blame my OCD.

However, he had thought of everything! Our close friends were waiting outside for us afterwards, and he had the whole weekend of celebrating planned with friends, siblings and family. It truly was an experience I will never forget!

Colorado couple, Sasha and Alex, gathered all the closest friends and family for their tropical destination wedding in beautiful Sayulita, Mexico. Villa Valentin, a breathtaking beach estate, had all the charm and character one could desire for a modern Mexico affair and the couple played up the vibes with colorful, joyful details. Adorable, hot pink custom paper goods and invitations were by Della Torre Designs while delightful florals were created by Flor Mimo. Sasha’s Leanne Marshall gown was the epitome of chic, simple beach vibes while fun accents like rainbow pom-pom garland, super adorable gift bags added touches of lightheartedness. What made the wedding special and unique?

It was such an incredible experience to have all our closest friends and family in a tropical destination! That was our vision and it really came to life once everyone arrived and we not only had the wedding day but a few days leading up to the wedding to enjoy Sayulita.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I have been obsessed with Leanne Marshall for years and I knew I wanted some lightweight for the heat in Mexico so silk seemed like a great option. It was actually the first gown I tried on and ended up going back to it after trying on many other gowns. I loved the gold detail that made it feel a little less traditional and gave it some flare.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

We did a lot ourselves once we arrived to Mexico; I think the gift bags were super fun and we put those together ourselves with the help of some Etsy finds and local goodies. The ceremony was officiated by the bride’s father which made that so special.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

We both agree that the ceremony was our favorite part of the day, such a surreal emotional moment. The first look was also really fun!

We got engaged at the top of the gondola in Telluride, under a shooting star Alex dropped to one knee, it was a total surprise. We had an amazing few days celebrating in Telluride after that.

Alex and Rob were married at one of our favorite scenic destinations—Malibu Rocky Oaks. The couple enlisted the skills of planner Berlanti Azhak to design their day which included a merlot-centric color palette and romantic vibes. Florist Poppy Design Co brought her A-game and created an incredible ceremony arch and stunning centerpieces filled with deep red and pops of dusty pink. Calligraphy was by Ruth Jahja-Daro and dusty lavender florals climbed the cake by Susie Cakes. Check out all the details and sunny moments captured in these photos by Gina & Ryan.

What made the wedding special and unique?

The wedding was a perfect combination of our styles.  Rob is obsessed with hand drawn movie posters, and instead of a welcome book we had guests sign a custom poster we had that symbolized important parts of us and our relationship. Our two grandmothers passed away years before the wedding, but we found a way to incorporate them into the night by naming signature cocktails after them (as well as our cats names).

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

My gown was by Maggie Sottero – I’ve been watching Say Yes To the Dress on TLC for over 10 years.  I wasn’t the type of person who fantasized about my wedding dress from a young age, but I’ve always thought that the store looked and seemed so glamorous! When we got engaged, my mom said she would fly out with my sister and niece and we would go to Kleinfeld (where the show is filmed).  I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for, but when I put my dress on it was love at first sight. Overall it was an amazing experience at Kleinfeld and would highly recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to go and experience finding a dress there.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

We had lavender sachets on each chair (along with a fan because it was hot) that guests threw on us as we were walking out after officially becoming husband and wife. Along with our signature cocktails, I did a choreographed dance with my dad which was a surprise to everyone.  My husband has been enamored with movies his whole life, instead of table numbers we did our favorite movies as table names.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The most memorable part of the day was seeing Rob at the end of the aisle when I first walked down. We didn’t do first looks, so it was a completely overwhelming experience seeing him waiting for me at the end of the aisle surrounded by all of our friends and family.

Tell us how you met and how you became engaged?

Rob and I met at work.  We both were working for Robert Downey Jr’s production company.

I love Disneyland – we scheduled a trip to spend the night at the hotel with my parents. He proposed before the evening show started. I was totally surprised and embarrassed it was in front of so many people!!

Chinese wedding traditions are often extravagant—a colorful and bold celebration of love. Beautiful as that may be, photographer Mattie C. set out to create inspiration for the more quiet, artistic and modern Chinese brides. Under her creative direction the team designed a shoot honoring Chinese culture with a soft and elegant color palette. Highlights include authentic blue porcelain dinnerware, graphic white arrangements and traditional floral crown and fan by Da Fiori Design, and calligraphy invitations by Maurelle Calligraphy and DesignMattie C. captures the delicate balance between Chinese elements and Western wedding design both as the visionary for the shoot and in her photographs.

from the photographer: The invention of porcelain was one of the biggest milestones in Chinese art history. Inspired by these beautiful porcelain designs and color palette, this wedding inspiration shoot is essentially based on this art form. From the traditional tea ceremony and qipao (traditional Chinese dress) to the wedding gown, table settings and decor, I wanted to put together something clean, modern, minimal, with abundant hints of Chinese traditions thoughtfully incorporated.
