Caroline and Ben’s wedding at Parker Hill

We are completely holi-dazzled by Caroline and Ben’s Auburn, Alabama wedding. Invision Events planned the day with help from florist The Flower Store and stationer Linen & Leaf. The deep maroon palette is the perfect twist on traditional holiday colors and keeps things totally timeless with a multi-seasonal appeal. The details are stunning—a lush ceremony arch, letterpress calligraphy, wood-mounted custom signage, embroidered cocktail napkins, suspended greenery structures and flowers everywhere—and the best part is that it was all set against the backdrop of the bride’s family cabin at Parker Hill. The family property is also a venue and Carline and Ben’s wedding was the first to be celebrated there. Lucky for us, the couple enlisted the skills of our friend Davy Whitener Photography to capture their day and the images are stunning.

What made the wedding special and unique? 

The wedding was unique to me because it was freezing and raining most of the day! We had to do a last minute rain tent for ceremony, but it ended up all working out and was beautiful. We were all close together and huddled up! And our pictures turned out beautiful!

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

My mom and I found the Rivini gown in Atlanta at Lori’s Bridals where “Say Yes to the Dress” is filmed. I had looked at several other places, but when I tried this one on it was that feeling of “THIS IS IT!” It fit me like a glove so I didn’t need to do many alterations and the veil really sold me on the dress as well.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

We did a lot of personalization like most people do from the napkins to the cups, but I think the biggest thing was having the wedding at our family cabin. My dad renovated it for the wedding so none of our guests had ever been there! It was our own style from the actual venue down to the décor!

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The vows were the most memorable part of the day for me! Our longtime family friend married us and my aunt read a poem that my grandmother – who had passed the year before – had written years ago about getting married on a rainy day. It was so surreal that it was actually raining on our wedding day! I felt like my grandmother was with us at the ceremony.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

We met in Destin when I was on a girls trip in 2015. I vacationed in Destin a lot and had a friend that was living there. We ran into him and he introduced us! Ben deployed to South America a week later for six months. We kept in touch and when he got back to the states we immediately started dating. The engagement was very low key! We were living in Destin and on the way to dinner he said needed to get something from my parents beach condo that he had left there. We went out on the balcony and there were flowers and he got on one knee and asked! It was just us – very personal and sweet! And overlooking the ocean which is a big part of our life!

Ali and Drew’s wedding at Pawleys Pelican Inn

Ali married Drew and his beautiful son Jack in an intimate ceremony at a vintage South Carolina inn, along the ocean. According to 3E8 Photography there wasn’t a dry eye at Pawleys Pelican Inn when the couple professed their vows. Ali, a design graduate, had a specific vision for the couple’s day and enlisted the help of planner Smells Like Peonies Events to execute her vision. The details include dusty-hued florals by Willow Event Designs that are a total embodiment of the wedding aesthetic—relaxed romance with subtle vintage boho vibes. Illustration and stationery design were by the bride and a show-piece cake was by Incredible Edible Cakes. The rainy day was punctuated by a break in the clouds for a spectacular sunset and 3E8 Photography captured it along with all the moments of the day in these images.

What made the wedding special and unique? 

From the photographer-  All of the details were designed and styled by Ali, executed by a WONDERFUL wedding coordinator, and came together like a fine art masterpiece. She married Drew and his beautiful son Jack in an intimate ceremony at a vintage South Carolina Inn, along the ocean. They wrote their own vows and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. It rained for most of the day, but the sun broke in the evening to reveal one of the most intense sunsets I have ever seen! The venue was a personal favorite of mine. It was a vintage inn on Pawley’s Island South Carolina. The venue featured original, beautifully worn-in wooden floors and a wrap around porch that was so quintessentially southern. Everything about the wedding exuded charm and intimacy, providing the perfect platform for the showcasing of love and celebrating with the closest of friends and family.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

From the bride- The dress I got from Tie The Knot Bridal Couture Collections in Naples, FL. As a designer I was very hesitant to go into a bridal store and have to work with someone who pulls gowns for you. However, I was also nervous to purchase anything online for fear of return policies, etc. Time was ticking and I made an appointment last minute when visiting my mom in Naples. She wasn’t able to be with my sister when she picked her wedding dress so I knew it would make her happy to have an appointment she could be at. The girl that ran the shop understood my style from the few pictures I showed her and I ended up falling in love with the 3rd dress I tried on. I actually picked it more for my fiance than I did for me. It showed more curves than I am used to showing but I knew it was flattering and he would like it on me. I loved the back of the dress and felt very romantic in it. My mom loved it as well which sealed the deal.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal? 

From the bride – Every detail was crucial in helping us achieve the aesthetic and vibe that we were striving for. Brian was on board from the start and super supportive of our vision. He understood that we not only wanted him to come and take photos of us and our family, we wanted him to capture the entire feeling of ‘our day’. Brian not only delivered what we had wanted, he went above and beyond my highest expectations. I was up the night before the wedding working on the set-up details, things that I thought of last minute that I didn’t get a chance to tell Brian about beforehand. However, when we received our pictures after the wedding I saw that Brian could see it all without me having to point anything out. His eye for detail is excellent. Brian captured the mood, the details, the emotion, our friends, and our family perfectly.

What was the most memorable part of the day? 

From the photographer – The most memorable parts of the day, for me, occurred at the very beginning and very end of the wedding. I walked into a venue that I had never before photographed, with a bride that I had only had the chance to speak to on the phone. What I was greeted with was something so beautiful, so quaint, and so vintage charming that I can only hope to return to that venue again and work with more brides whose lives are entrenched in the arts. Being trusted to capture something that was so personal to someone was a wonderful privilege for me. Well, I lied. I have another favorite part of the day – the vows. The vows were handwritten and just beautiful to witness. I teared up behind camera and was overcome with the emotion, practically spilling from the tiny room in which the ceremony took place. It was beautiful. Lastly, the sunset. It was cloudy and rainy all day, but the sun peaked through the clouds right toward the end of toasts, basking the venue in this intense, golden glow. I quickly stole the couple out for some sunset portraits and they became my favorite shots of the day.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

From the Bride – I met Drew when my sister, Katie, began dating his brother, Anthony (they are now married). Katie and I lived together in NYC and Anthony was living abroad in London at the time. Whenever Anthony made it to NYC, Drew would take the opportunity to see his brother and visit as well. We got to spend some time together and quickly our relationship turned romantic. After two years of long distance, I moved to Pittsburgh to be with Drew and his son Jack. Drew proposed a little less than a year later. He got down on one knee at the same time as The Bachelor in the final episode. I thought he was mocking the show, as he often does, and didn’t take him seriously until I saw the ring!

Chelsea and Alex’s Charlotte Winter Wedding

There is something so soft and beautiful about pastel hues in the winter months and today’s real couple incorporated a light pink palette perfectly into their Charlotte-area nuptials. Bride Chelsea is the owner and florist behind Blooming Branch Creative and when it came time to marry her love, Alex, she—naturally—had a pretty strong vision. The couple created a winter wedding that was neither rustic nor classic southern and personally sourced much of the decor including hundreds of vintage votives adding to the romance of 10 Catawba. Chelsea enlisted the help of Jimmy Blooms to implement her vision and the florals are—of course—fabulous with just the right amount of dusty, pink roses and textured accents. Lucky for us Cheyenne Schultz Photography was behind the lens capturing this winter inspiration in her signature timeless style.

What made the wedding special and unique?

With the fact that there are weddings every day in every part of the world, I always feel like having a truly unique wedding is a difficult achievement, but we had fun pulling our design together and creating a winter wedding that was neither rustic nor classic southern – as I feel those are frequently the two styles that I see in the Charlotte area. As a small business owner of Blooming Branch Creative – a floral and wedding design company – I have seen my share of weddings and didn’t struggle very much with identifying the particular elements that are reflective of my personal style. We sourced glassware from every thrift store in the metro area (we had over 350 votives lit in the space!), decorated an old mantel from my childhood home, and sourced every piece of china for our sweetheart table. Everything we did was planned and executed together, so it perfectly reflected our personal taste individually and as a couple. Our wedding was a true labor of love and while it was a ton of work being so hands on, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way!

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

My wedding day look was completely custom, and it was truly fun to piece together something that was so reflective of my personal style. I always knew I wanted a simple, fit-and-flare gown, but I looked for a while to find a removable overskirt that gave me a sleek silhouette, but without the bulk of a full skirt. I ultimately pieced my entire dress together because I couldn’t find a single style that checked every box. My Stella York fit and flare dupioni silk gown was altered to include the slits on the sides of the bodice to give an interesting element (and some very subtle sex appeal) to an otherwise simple dress. I found the tulle overskirt at a different bridal salon, and knew immediately I wanted to add lace. We had some trial and error with that alteration (and only a few tears in the process!), but I ultimately ended up choosing a lace that looked almost exactly like the vintage trim on my Mom’s wedding veil, which made it that much more special. Ever the deal hunter, I sourced my wedding day shoes and headpiece from Zulily, and found a custom jewelry designer in Israel to cast my blooming branch earrings, a tribute to their significance in my life and our wedding design.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

Alex and I are not people to do anything without intention or meaning, so our wedding was special because there were so many elements that represented us and what our marriage means to us. One of our favorite elements were the branches that were suspended over several of the tables with hanging tealight terrariums. I’ve always loved the aesthetic quality of winter branches and how they mirror the seasons in the same way that our lives ebb and flow, so they were symbolic in that sense, and to us they represented the commitment that we have for one another in all seasons of life. Plus, we sourced them from my parents’ property in the mountains, which was equally meaningful. My other favorite element was the giant greenery hoops that were suspended over the head tables. I created these on the Wednesday before our wedding alongside my Dad and Uncle, who had way too much fun playing florist for the day. It’s a memory with them that I’ll always cherish. There were so many other elements that we made together or held meaning for us personally, and we loved sharing those particular details with our friends and family.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Hands down, our favorite part of the day was our first look. We never thought we’d want to do one, but with a winter wedding, we ultimately had no choice with such an early sunset time. We were both emotional, and I was so thankful for a few moments alone with Alex prior to everything to calm nerves and reconnect. I also remember standing in the small vestibule with our parents and wedding party, waiting to be announced in to the reception and feeling so overwhelmed with joy. It was the moment I felt like everything had finally come together and we could just relax and celebrate, and being mushed into that tiny room with everyone we loved most was pretty much a perfect moment.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Alex and I ironically met at a singles/young professionals event hosted by his church. I attended with a friend, begrudgingly, and neither Alex nor I wanted to be there. When we were grouped together by the area of the city we lived in by the color on our nametags, we immediately hit it off and spent the rest of the evening together. After that time, Alex and I stayed in touch and hung out, but I still considered him a friend and nothing more. Eventually, my friends teased me that we needed to date, but I wasn’t so sure. We consider our first official “date” a trip to the movies to see the MOST unromantic movie ever – The Revenant. From there, he took me salsa dancing, taco eating, wine rooming and to cooking class. I was impressed by his widespread interests, creativity in planning, punctuality, consistency, ability to communicate, and most importantly, how comfortable he made me feel. We started dating, he met my parents a few short weeks later, and the rest is history. We got engaged during a private picnic at The Duke Mansion in Charlotte, under the most beautiful oak tree. He gave me a card that outlined his feelings and hopes for our future together (which is awesome because I never would have remembered what he’d said), and we celebrated with my family afterward. Planning our wedding together and being married has had its challenges of course, but Alex and I are truly partners and I’m beyond blessed to have him by my side.

Anna and Antonio’s wedding at Beacon Hill

Anna and Antonio planned their dream wedding in the Northwest, which meant that all their family and friends would get to experience the region where they fell in love. Haylo Wedding & Events helped the couple plan their Spokane wedding celebration with a traditional ceremony at St. Aloysius Cathedral followed by a picturesque reception at Beacon Hill. White florals and greenery installations by Rose & Blossom added romance while the al fresco, family-style reception was filled with seasonal local cheeses, fish and beers. What made the wedding special and unique?

Our wedding was special and unique in that we planned to have it in the Northwest, which meant that all of our family and friends would get to see and experience the region where we fell in love.  We grew as individuals and as a couple in the Northwest to something truly special. The weekend started with a gathering of our entire guest list at a cruise welcome reception on Lake Coeur d’Alene on a picturesque summer night. We received the blessing of a Jesuit, who connected with all of our guests in a profound and personal way. And ended with the perfect amount of detail at Beacon Hill, including a Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream truck, polaroid photobooth and decorations from both the bride and groom’s hometown.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I knew I had found the perfect dress when I tried it on, it fit like a glove, and made me feel like the most authentic me. My mother had flown in from Minnesota for the weekend, so I only had a few days to try on and find the right dress. After trying on quite a few different gowns at multiple boutiques, we landed at David’s Bridal and I spotted a dress that looked very different from the rest. I asked to try it on and the rest was history!

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal? 

The bride’s mother decorated the wedding venue and added personal touches to create the feel of an enchanting, classical evening amongst gardens and vineyards. Much of our focus was on blending our families and friends so we wanted to be sure to incorporate long dinner tables and the family-style service to help encourage conversation and promote a large family feel to the meal. Our meal choices were also made with regard to the season and uniqueness of the Northwest, which meant we incorporated local cheeses, fish and beers.

What was the most memorable part of the day? 

The ceremony itself was incredibly memorable and special for us. We had no idea the emotions and love we were going to feel during the ceremony at St. Aloysius Church at Gonzaga University.  The homily given by Fr. Peter Byrne was incredibly personal and heartfelt that everyone in the church could feel the love. We also incorporated Filipino wedding rituals that incorporated the veil, cords and coins.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

It was the weekend of November 17th, Anna and I were heading back to Seattle for what Anna believed to be a “baby shower” for our friends that recently announced their pregnancy.  In actuality, we were going there to get engaged and the “baby shower” was simply a ploy to get us back to our former and favorite neighborhood of Ballard. This was the place where Anna and I had first lived together when we moved across the country a year or so before; it was where we fell in love.

However, on our way to Seattle things began to unravel with my carefully orchestrated plans. The weather was exceptionally dicey driving through rural Washington and ended up turning into a full-blown snow/sleet storm in the mountain passes, which created a bit of anxiety for both of us. As a result, Anna had picked and scratched at her manicured nails until they appeared as though they had been run over by a lawn mower. This was no good.

This was something I did not think about. I was pretty sure if I were to ask her to marry me with her nails in such a condition, I would be in big trouble. Luckily for me, the morning after our arrival she was so bothered by her nails that she wanted to spend the morning in the nail salon. The rest of the weekend went on without a hitch! We strolled the streets of our old neighborhood, visited the dog park with our yellow Labrador, Dupree, and we ate at the best Caribbean-inspired sandwich shop in all the land.

On Friday evening we made plans to grab a cocktail and dinner at a couple more of our favorite spots, which is where I had planned on proposing. While we were sipping on our overpriced cocktails at the bar, it hit me…I needed someone to grab a picture of the moment, as my plan was to pop the question on the walk to dinner next door. So, when Anna went to the powder room, I explained to our bartender what was going to happen and asked her to take our picture when I was on my knee. Finally, after I had paid for the bill and went to the bathroom to splash water on my face, we left and were off to dinner. Right before we got to the restaurant, I stopped gave Anna a hug, told her I love her more than anything in the world, got on one knee and asked her to marry me. To my surprise, she said “Wait, what?! Are you serious? Is this for real? Is this really happening?” and after I assured her this was very much for real, she said “YES!! Of course!”.

At dinner, we were greeted by our favorite wine sommelier with glasses of champagne, wine and an amazing charcuterie board. To be honest, we were so excited we could hardly eat! Little did Anna know, there was yet another surprise in store for her. I had always known that this night would be something she wanted to share with all of our closest friends and family, so I made a few phone calls and the plan was set.

After dinner, I suggested we keep celebrating and go to another amazing restaurant for drinks. Again, this was all a ploy to get her to the location where twenty of our closest friends from Seattle, Spokane and Minnesota were waiting. When we arrived, Anna cried from excitement and surprise after recognizing all her favorite people were there with us to celebrate our engagement. It was so amazing to see all of the love and support from our friends and family that made that evening and weekend one to remember!!

Kelley and Jimmy’s Black Tie Detroit Wedding

Brown graduates, Kelley and Jimmy moved from New York to Detroit and marked their new lives with an event that was as much a celebration of Detroit’s renaissance as it was their marriage.  They enlisted the help of Kathy Byrum of Dream Wedding & Event Planners to help them show off Detroit to their many out-of-town guests with fabulous local vendors and a stunning ceremony at Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament and a show-stopping reception at The Detroit Institute of Arts. Dusty florals and greenery installations by Katie Wachowiak dressed the day and an epic cake by Sweet Heather Anne finished it off. Befitting to the theme, the couple and their guests danced the night away under Diego Rivera’s ultra-famous mural and Blaine Siesser was on hand to capture each moment of Kelly and Jimmy’s day.

What made the wedding special and unique?

When Jimmy and I had gotten engaged we had already made plans to move from New York to Detroit. Jimmy grew up in Detroit as did my parents and grandparents. We were so excited to be moving back during a time that has become known as the renaissance of one of America’s greatest cities and we’ve enjoyed spending time downtown exploring new restaurants and supporting local entrepreneurs. We knew we were going to have a lot of out of town guests so our biggest goal was to show off Detroit! I couldn’t imagine a better place to celebrate our new life together in our new city than the Detroit Institute of Art – a true gem of Detroit and rich with important history.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I had the best dress shopping experience! I returned to New York where my little sister (and maid of honor) still lives and set up three appointments at different bridal boutiques for my mom, my sister and me to visit. I was nervous so before the day started I went to dry bar and got my hair done so I would feel confident trying on those dresses. Every appointment was different and special. Ultimately, I returned to the very first boutique we visited and bought the second dress I had ever tried on! I think I knew it was meant to be when the woman assisting me told me she had grown up in Michigan! The dress is Vera Wang’s Kathleen – a strapless mermaid gown with a hand-draped bodice and an inverted flange skirt. When my bridesmaids were asked what they thought my dress would look like, not one came close to guessing it right! And that’s what I loved about my dress, it was so unexpected for me but I felt like a total movie star on our big day.

 

 

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

We looked for little ways to add personal touches throughout the weekend. My favorite were the signature cocktail signs we had made with a sketch of our English Cream Retriever puppy, Wally, after whom we named our signature cocktail. On top of that, we had light-up cowboy hats for the dance floor as a nod to my having grown up in Texas. Our invitations had an olive branch emblem on them as a nod to Jimmy’s family’s Greek heritage. The song my dad chose for our father-daughter dance was One Shining Moment by Motown great Diana Ross. And finally, our gift bags were filled with special items from Detroit – a “Detroit vs. Everyone” branded water bottle, Detroit Tiger’s peanuts (Jimmy’s family has been season ticket holders for 30 years), a post card and visitors guide from the Detroit Institute of Arts, along with Sander chocolates.

 

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Gosh there were so many! From my first look with my dad, to dancing all night with the Diego Rivera mural surrounding all my friends and family, the moment I am always transported back to is when Jimmy and I exchanged our vows. Even though we were standing in front of 300 people, in that moment it felt like it was just the two of us in that church. It was incredibly emotional and I don’t think I’ll ever forget the look on Jimmy’s face.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Jimmy and I met in college at Brown University. He played football and I was on the field hockey team so we bumped in to each other quite a bit in Brown’s athletic training room. At first, I don’t think he was interested in a relationship but I wore him down over time and we were dating by the time he graduated! We both moved to New York out of college and after a few years we moved in together. The weekend Jimmy proposed I should have known it was coming. My parents were visiting New York to celebrate Easter and we had a busy weekend lined up. First thing Saturday morning we were supposed to meet at Bridget’s Garden, a garden located in Madison Square Park, that was named after my mother’s sister and a very special place to our family. I didn’t think anything of it when we got there before everyone else because my family is always late. After a moment, Jimmy grabbed my hands and said, “You ready?” and I instantly knew what was coming. He dropped to one knee and proposed. Meanwhile, he had hired a photographer to capture the whole thing! On top of that, when I came out of shock and we crossed the street to where my family was waiting, we found my family, Jimmy’s family and a group of my closest friends from all over the country waiting with champagne! The rest of the weekend was one big celebration. My sister had organized a big dinner that night at Buddakan in the Meat Packing district followed by a Tex-Mex brunch (my favorite!) on Sunday. Jimmy knew I wanted family and friends to be a part of our engagement and he nailed it!
