I want to become a society lady Rockin' a new rock?!

At Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, in a pocket garden hidden amongst hedges, Jillian and Jonathan’s wedding stirred every feeling of wonder and magic of A Midsummer’s Night Dream. Planned by Scarlet Begonias Customized Events, the day was elegant and ethereal, yet pastoral and organic. Jillian’s bouquet by Spring Ledge Farm included florals native to the nearby fields and forest, a nod to the New England charm that exuded from every moment of the day. Even the greenery seemed to grow and intertwine through the reception tent creating an extension of the surrounding landscape. Lucky for us, the couple enlisted the skills of Ashley Helen Photography to capture the beauty of their day in these stunning images.

What made the wedding special and unique?

Because we had so many guests coming from out of town, we wanted to present the best of what rural New England has to offer. We chose outdoor venues with views of the mountains, at a sculpture garden and a private home designed by local artists Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Charles Platt, and held our rehearsal dinner at Simon Pearce, a local glass-blowing factory. My husband and I are United Methodists and we asked a pastor from a nearby church to perform the ceremony, so our faith was incorporated even though the wedding itself was held outside in a secular venue. In keeping with the theme of an evening wedding surrounded by forest, the motif was “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” with lots of trailing greenery, fairy lights, and long flowing bridesmaid gowns.

I wanted to bring the forest into the tent as much as possible, so for the centerpieces I chose tall branching greenery decorated with delicate fairy lights. Our outstanding wedding planner found more than a hundred dirty antique brass candlesticks for rent and polished them up to a soft gold that perfectly matched the flatware. They were all mismatched, which added a bit of whimsy.

All of our florals were grown and arranged by Spring Ledge Farm. I chose a cascading bridal bouquet with white flowers and smaller pink-blossomed bouquets for the bridesmaids. My father and fiancé wore white flowers in their boutonnieres, to match me, whereas my father-in-law and the groomsmen had pink rosebuds. One of my favorite decor items was the pre-planted decorative pots; Spring Ledge designed and grew the pots for us, then delivered them to rent out the weekend of the wedding. We used them to cover up the tent pegs. They were all different; my favorite was the one with a tiny Japanese maple growing in it.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I knew from the outset I wanted a gown with simple lines and fabric. When you walk into a bridal store and say you want no lace, tulle, rhinestones, or ruffles, that really narrows your choices down! However, I fell in love with the illusion back on my Justin Alexander gown, so I had to backtrack on my opinions about sparkly embroidery. Because the cathedral-length-plus train of the gown made such a statement, the rest of the dress’s simple lines didn’t seem too plain, and the deep v neckline and exposed back added an air of sophistication and subtle sexiness. Between the sparkly back and the length of the train, I didn’t want to overdo my accessories, so I wore only a pair of silver crystal drop earrings from BHLDN and a sapphire bracelet my sister had designed for me – four stones to represent the members of our family as my “something blue.” Badgley Mischka heels with a spangle of rhinestones on the back (and heel protectors to keep me from sinking in the grass) completed the look. We wanted to preserve the formality of the occasion despite the outdoor setting, which is why we chose a black tie dress code. My husband wore a tailored tuxedo from Jos A Bank and subtly textured shirt from Bonobos. He and all his groomsmen kept to the traditional black bow ties for the event.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

Aside from having the wedding in my (the bride’s) hometown, my favorite and most personal touches were sleeping in my childhood bed and getting ready in the same house I grew up in. It made the moment when we all bundled into the shuttle to go to the wedding all the more poignant. We brought in my husband’s family tradition of using his grandfather’s Naval Academy saber to cut our wedding cake. It’s been used to cut three generations of Shonerd wedding cakes, and even though his grandfather passed away several years previously, I was glad to be part of his legacy in that way on the day I married into the family.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

My sister gave me the excellent idea of doing “first looks” with my bridesmaids and my dad before driving to the ceremony. She and my mom ushered the bridesmaids and Dad out of the house, got me into my dress, and then I walked around the house for the surprise. Only one of the bridesmaids had seen pictures of my final dress choice, and their reactions to the final effect made for great pictures! The reveal moment with my dad was very sweet. I pinned on his boutonniere and I’ve never seen him look so proud.

My husband and I agree on our favorite “wedding day hack” – after we were done with bride and groom portraits after the ceremony, when everyone else was at cocktail hour, we sneaked into the tent to share a drink and some appetizers together in a quiet moment as newlyweds. It gave us a chance to see all the decor in its pristine glory and try the delicious southwest egg rolls and coconut shrimp from chef Doug Langevin that we’d carefully picked out months before!

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

We met via Match.com just after New Years in 2015. I immediately liked his smile and the fact that he’d visit his grandma after work to help fix her computer. He (apparently) liked the fact that my profile specified that any interested parties would have to know the difference between “their, they’re, and there.” We met for coffee and had so much to talk about that we stayed until the shop closed. Two and a half years later, Jon proposed while we were staying at Ballyseede Castle in Ireland. After a day of travel and last-minute sightseeing (I had insisted on an impromptu day trip to the Cliffs of Moher that threatened to ruin his plans!), he suggested we take a picture in the castle garden before going in to dinner. As soon as we reached the gazebo, he went down on one knee, and the photographers that he’d booked got every stage of my total shock on camera! My favorite line from his memorized proposal speech was “you are the one I’ve prayed for my whole life.” I couldn’t have designed a more personal, romantic proposal if I’d done it myself.

Colorado couple, Sasha and Alex, gathered all the closest friends and family for their tropical destination wedding in beautiful Sayulita, Mexico. Villa Valentin, a breathtaking beach estate, had all the charm and character one could desire for a modern Mexico affair and the couple played up the vibes with colorful, joyful details. Adorable, hot pink custom paper goods and invitations were by Della Torre Designs while delightful florals were created by Flor Mimo. Sasha’s Leanne Marshall gown was the epitome of chic, simple beach vibes while fun accents like rainbow pom-pom garland, super adorable gift bags added touches of lightheartedness. What made the wedding special and unique?

It was such an incredible experience to have all our closest friends and family in a tropical destination! That was our vision and it really came to life once everyone arrived and we not only had the wedding day but a few days leading up to the wedding to enjoy Sayulita.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I have been obsessed with Leanne Marshall for years and I knew I wanted some lightweight for the heat in Mexico so silk seemed like a great option. It was actually the first gown I tried on and ended up going back to it after trying on many other gowns. I loved the gold detail that made it feel a little less traditional and gave it some flare.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

We did a lot ourselves once we arrived to Mexico; I think the gift bags were super fun and we put those together ourselves with the help of some Etsy finds and local goodies. The ceremony was officiated by the bride’s father which made that so special.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

We both agree that the ceremony was our favorite part of the day, such a surreal emotional moment. The first look was also really fun!

We got engaged at the top of the gondola in Telluride, under a shooting star Alex dropped to one knee, it was a total surprise. We had an amazing few days celebrating in Telluride after that.

It was only natural that Prita and Mac host their wedding at Twin Lake Village, as the 100-year old breathtaking lakefront property in New Hampshire overlooking Little Lake Sunapee was developed by the bride’s extended family. The couple invited their friends and family to share in the love, along with the rustic scenery, lake home accommodations and tennis, boating shuffle board and hiking. The lawn ceremony and white tent reception were coordinated by Naturally Elegant Designs. Stunning florals and greenery by Emily Herzig Floral dressed every detail including a ceremony arch and a suspended escort card display. Lucky for us, Kelsey Combe Photography was on hand and captured all the breezy beauty and airy details of the lakeshore event in these beautiful images.

What made the wedding special and unique?

Our wedding took place over Labor Day Weekend at Twin Lake Village (or TLV as we like to call it!). It was developed by my extended family and has been in business for over 100 years. It is a beautiful property located in New Hampshire overlooking Little Lake Sunapee, and is home to a gorgeous hotel, houses scattered across the property that can house anywhere from 6-14 people, a par-3 9 hole golf course, boat house, tennis courts, shuffle board and amazing hiking trails! We both love the outdoors and wanted a place where family and friends could relax over the holiday weekend and partake in fun activities. My Dad grew up on the property before college, and my parents (bride’s parents!) got married there, as did many of my cousins, so it felt right and special to have it there too!

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

We were living in Connecticut at the time and one of my girlfriends who had gotten married the year before spoke highly about a small boutique a mile down the street from where I lived. It was started by a woman who left her job in investment banking in New York City to pursue her passion and start the bridal boutique. I thought that was so badass so naturally I went!! It was the 2nd or 3rd dress I found and I never looked back. I loved the boutique because of how down to earth and kind everyone was and how cozy and private the space felt. The dress is made by Spanish designer Pronovias and has been seen on so many different brides – and it doesn’t surprise me because it has a special way of conforming to a woman’s body and making anyone feel beautiful.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

Mac (short for Macpherson) is of Scottish descent (specifically, the “MacPherson” clan for all you Scottish history buffs), so all the groomsmen wore ties that featured the MacPherson clan tartan.

We wanted our ceremony to be personal so we had a very close family friend officiate, Mac and I wrote our own vows and we asked close family to prepare readings (of their choosing!).

My mother is Indonesian and I was fortunate enough to spend my childhood there. She wanted to bring some Indonesia to the party so she and my aunts wore traditional Indonesian formal wear (Kebaya).

Having the wedding at TLV was personal and special as well because everyone stayed on site and the entire property was walkable, which was fantastic for bonding and partaking in activities. We had a party on the beach the day before the wedding and hosted a golf tournament. Everyone attended a BBQ the night before the wedding on the lawn.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Oh man this is such a hard one! So many. Walking down the aisle was pretty surreal. I was so nervous! I think the most memorable part of the day was the dancing we did. The band was INCREDIBLE. We were all so sweaty by the end of the night that we all jumped in the lake!

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Mac and I met in college, but didn’t start dating until junior year! We had been dating for seven years when Mac proposed on the top of Mt. Lafayette, a 5,240 ft. mountain in New Hampshire that we had hiked up. We were with two very good friends of ours who had no idea. My girlfriend had sprained both her knees on the hike and we had to move slowly so she didn’t injure herself more! When we got to the summit of the mountain, the sun was setting, and we were an hour late. Little did we know, Mac had hiked up for the past 7 hours with a bottle of champagne and an entire charcuterie board ON HIS BACK!! We laughed and cried and proceeded to hike down to the hut we were staying in, in the dark.

Jessie and Adam let The Harper—a BRAND new venue—steer the design direction of their lovely Costa Mesa wedding. The couple wanted to emulate their laid-back style but maintain a modern and sophisticated feel and The Harper‘s design elevated the look perfectly. The sunny, courtyard ceremony framed by olive trees was followed by a lovely reception where guests sat family style under large retro brass chandeliers. Understated, modern elegance was at every turn including soft, white florals by French Buckets, Jessie’s streamlined gown by Made With Love from Love & Lace, and type-driven paper design by Kayla Adams. The couple enlisted the eye of Hannah Beth Photography to capture all the details in her signature journalistic style and we’re totally loving every bit of it!

What made the wedding special and unique?

We were so honored to be the FIRST wedding at the new venue in Costa Mesa, The Harper. It was exactly what we wanted – something modern and sophisticated but not overly fancy. Our style is laid-back, but we really wanted our guests to feel like they were coming to something special. The ceremony was outdoors, where the altar was framed by two big olive trees. The reception was literally in this completely renovated room with brass chandeliers, refurbished antique wood bars, and modern decor. It came with long wood farm tables so our guests could sit family style. The chairs were metal and wood and felt so much more sophisticated then a typical folding chair. There is a huge sky light over the dance floor that created a really nice focal point in the reception. I loved that everything at the venue was close together, but there were plenty of little spaces for guests to hang out; modern lounge furniture, outdoor space, and a garden. I wanted to keep the color palette really neutral and timeless, but since it was an October wedding, we decided to incorporate some dried florals with the live florals. It was a perfect way to create a Fall look without using orange and red.

The venue uses a caterer called roomforty. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever loved wedding food like I loved ours. They did a modern tostada bar with a gorgeous presentation. And the appetizer highlight was the “Nachos in a Gutter”, where delicious nachos were served straight from an 8 ft rain gutter!

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I knew I wanted something minimalist, but it was surprisingly hard to find! So many people told me not too stress about the dress since you “only wear it for one day.” As I thought more about it, your photos are the only thing from the day that last, so if I didn’t like my dress, I probably wouldn’t like the photos either! So I did a TON of research and found a brand called Made With Love Bridal. It’s an Australian brand with an amazing mix of modern and timeless dresses that are so flattering! And they all have cute names – mine is called Georgie. Oh, and I bought it at an amazing little shop in Irvine, CA called Love & Lace Bridal. The whole team was lovely.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

– A friend of ours is a musician and played live music (that he wrote for us!!) as the bridal party walked down the aisle. It was perfect.

– During the ceremony, my brother came up and told the story of how we met in a sweet but funny way. It had the whole audience cracking up, and instantly made the environment feel light-hearted and relaxed. It helped slow everything down and we really got to take it all in. We had time to actually look around, laugh, and remember our journey.

– For the guestbook, we pre-attached photo corners to note cards so guests could take a Polaroid photo, attach it to the card, and write a note. Then we had them put the cards in a customized wood box from Artifact Uprising with our names and wedding date printed on the lid.

– We had signage at the Bars & Dessert Bar highlighting each of our favorite desserts and drinks.

– We had pouches of flower petals on the aisle seats to be tossed as we came back up the aisle.

– Our biggest highlight – we had an epic balloon drop during Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Adam and I wrote each other letters that our bridal party exchanged for us in the morning. Before all the photos and festivities started, I read his letter and it set the tone for the whole day. The week of your wedding is busy and hectic, but pausing for a moment to read a letter about how he felt about me made me forget the crazy past week and look forward to the day in front of me!

I never wanted to do a first look, but I also didn’t want to leave in the middle of our wedding to go take photos, so we decided to do it. Honestly, it was perfect. It felt so special and intimate. It allowed us to get our nerves out of the way and just be able to enjoy the day. I’ll never forget his teary eyes when he turned around and his shaky hands that grabbed mine, and our nervous laughter as we awkwardly looked each other up and down with complete joy!  Of course the day still flies by, but we tried to incorporate little things throughout the day to slow time down.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

It was Summer 2014. Jessie walked in her front door, and a foxy blue-eyed, red-bearded man in a Carhartt t-shirt was sitting on her couch. Our roommates were hanging out and Adam happened to tag along. There was an instant friendship but things stayed casual. We spent the rest of summer BBQing with friends.

Then, it happened.

One night while they were hanging out with friends, the new Tim McGraw song came on and when Adam sang every word verbatim, Jessie knew this wasn’t your typical Orange County boy. The flirting quickly became more obvious, followed by our first hang out at SideCar donuts, a trip to the OC Fair, and our first official date at Side Door. And two days later Adam met Jessie’s entire family, so it’s safe to say he was all in.

The next 4 years were a roller coaster of lots of travel, a couple moves, and some career highlights and challenges. But in the midst of it all, we became best friends, fell in love, and scored the most amazing community of people.

Washington DC couple, Robyn and Jesse wanted their guests to fully experience the Arizona desert throughout their Scottsdale destination celebration planned by Imoni Events. The couple opted for an outdoor ceremony and reception at Four Seasons Scottsdale so guests could enjoy the warm evening air. Invitations by Celebrations in Paper featured a watercolor illustration of Pinnacle Peak, the desert backdrop at the venue which was decked out in stunning white flowers and greenery by The Wildflower. Robyn and Jesse even surprised their guests with a firework before heading into the ballroom after dinner—an amazing kick off to a killer dance party. Lucky for us, the couple enlisted the eye of Cameron Clark Photography  to capture all their special details—and stunning scenery—in these gorgeous images.

From Cameron Clark and Sarrah from Imoni events: There were a lot of specials touches mixed in throughout Robyn and Jesse’s day. Since they live in Washington DC they wanted their guests to fully experience the Arizona desert. They opted for an outdoor ceremony and reception so guests could enjoy the warm evening air. For their invitations we incorporated a watercolor painting of Pinnacle Peak, the desert backdrop at Four Seasons. They also had a surprise firework show for all of their guests at the end of dinner before heading into the ballroom for dancing. The band played a Michael Jackson set where we handed out white sequined MJ gloves— the bride and groom love Michael Jackson!

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

Robyn carried a beaded purse that was her grandmother’s. Jesse surprised Robyn with a beautiful necklace. When the guests arrived to the ceremony, we had Jonah Littlesunday, a Navajo flautist, playing to incorporate the Native American heritage. At their head table the guests had monogrammed napkins at each place setting with the couples new monogram, and when the wedding ended the guests were presented with cake truffles shipped from Milk Bar, the bride and groom’s favorite bakery.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The surprise fireworks were a huge hit with all the guests and the couple really enjoyed that moment.
