I am going to contest #13 and #16. We are in the information age, as such, rules of the game change for a) convenience and b) cost. You also have to think about how economical using extra paper is and paying someone vast amounts of money to hand-write each address (let's face it, unless it's hand-calligraphed, it'll likely look sloppy and informal). These rules may have been proper etiquette some time ago but as times change, so must the process and what is considered proper. If a wedding can be held in a barn, an RSVP can be electronic. A wedding, and everything included in the event, must reflect the couple...after all, isn't the point of the event to celebrate the couple?

  Definitely agree with you, Bonny, that ultimately, the idea is for you to be able to deviate from the rules to make it work best for you! Remember, this is the most formal version of the rules, however breaking them is totally allowed.

For weddings...I just approved the proof of my invitations, so this is a bit awkward! I think this is a good guide, especially #15 about providing postage for the response card. If you're looking to cut costs, this is not the place! (seriously, I'm spending thousands on this event and can't afford $45 of postage?) Here are my potential "gaffes": #9 - My invitation includes the name of the church and the street address (no zip) and it looks great. Best if you spell out the numbers "five" instead of "5". #10 - I guess I missed the boat on that. Talk about cluttered! I think first and last names of the parents are perfectly appropriate, unless you are "J. Michael Bolton". Especially if both sets of parents are hosting! Oh well, I hope no one calls me out on that one. #11 - I used the American spelling of "honor" - I am not British, and thus used my own version of English.

  Haha. Sarah, you are too cute! I definitely think it sounds like you are totally fine. These guidelines are pretty formal, so there's definite allowance for making adjustments where you see fit! That's the great thing about modern weddings--while we do have formal etiquette that exists, brides are all about adjusting the rules to match their own vision of the day.

#16 is so out-dated it is laughable. By all means print the addresses on labels or directly on the envelope--it will be a lot neater than your own handwriting in almost all cases. Not everyone can afford to hire someone to address the envelopes! #10 don't bother to include the middle names of the hosts if it looks cluttered or takes up too much space--it just isn't necessary. Etiquette is important, but sometimes things change over time and etiquette should change with that (i.e. hand addressing envelopes).

  Hey Elizabeth! I can definitely agree with you that etiquette changes. Depending upon what context you are coming from, etiquette ends up being fairly subjective. I think one of the reasons hand addressing is seen as important is because most typed out addressing comes to us from businesses. Whenever I received a hand addressed letter in the mail (regardless of how neat the writing is) I always know that it is personal--it stands out and those are the letters I always open first. My tendency is to agree with #16 most definitely! As far as #10, again, we're talking about really formal etiquette. For many people, this type of tradition is still important. I think this guideline gives us a really great rule of thumb for very formal etiquette. From there, each bride has the option of choosing how strictly she wants to follow the rules, based on her own style and approach to etiquette! :) By the way, my favorite rule, which I wish everyone followed more, is #14. I was always taught that you never put registry information in your formal invitation.

in reference to #13 - as a wedding planner, for brides that are looking to cut costs, i recommend they print a reply card listing the RSVP address and email/website the number of RSVP cards that go unreturned is ridiculous - most guests will be internet savvy enough to reply electronically and those who aren't, remember the days when there were no reply cards and you pulled out your personal stationery and wrote a personal RSVP - i did this for my own wedding 6 years ago and have several lovely RSVPs from older guests!

I definitely agree with most of these but have to agree with most the ladies on the hand-written addresses. We went with a "faux calligraphy" from Palm Papers and it turned out SO lovely! Even more lovely than I could've hoped for hand written. I don't think anyone was offended and most of the time the envelope gets thrown away. I DID add vintage stamps to make it look more dressy though! Lots of good info here; I will share it with my sister, who is recently engaged. However, I have to disagree with number 16. While labels would certainly look tacky, I think printed envelopes are perfectly fine. There are so many beautiful script fonts to choose from, and it's cost-effective. Of course, I love me some hand-written mail, but I wouldn't consider this the only proper way. In fact, of the wedding invitations I've received over the last few years, hand-written addresses are quite rare.
