I want to become a society lady Rockin' a new rock?!

Torrey and James met and fell in love in San Diego so it was natural choice for their wedding celebration. With the help of Luxe Events they planned their destination wedding remotely while they both pursued graduate degrees. San Diego Museum of Art provided the beautiful setting which included a garden ceremony “in the round” and a reception in the historic courtyard of the museum. Modern design sensibilities and a black and white palette informed the details including florals by Parker and Posies and stationery by Brightly Designed. Lucky for us, the couple enlisted the skill of San Diego wedding photographers Let’s Frolic Together to capture their day in these light-strewn images.

Tell us about yourselves!

Torrey is originally from Huntington Beach, California, and currently works as a social worker and therapist at a school in Seattle. James is from Portland, Oregon, and is graduating from medical school this year. We were both in graduate school for the entire time we were planning our wedding! Some of our favorite things to do together include cooking together and exploring new cuisines, hiking, and traveling. Most importantly, we love spending time with our mini goldendoodle named Moose

What made the wedding special and unique?

We chose to get married in San Diego, which is where we met and fell in love. Even though it wasn’t always logistically easy to plan a wedding from far away, every time we came back to San Diego it felt like a mini-vacation! We had people come from truly all four corners of the country to celebrate with us all weekend. Each night leading up to the wedding we had the chance to spend time with a progressively larger group of friends and family, which made it easier to balance seeing all the people who came to celebrate with us and spending some quality time with people who we otherwise don’t get to see very often. Since we have both spent time living in different places throughout the time we were dating, our wedding was a place to bring together all our communities and by the end of the weekend it was so beautiful to see everyone mixing together, we felt so loved! In planning our wedding we wanted everyone to have fun, eat great food, and enjoy the setting.  We worked with the awesome Cara North of Luxe Events, and she helped us execute this vision. We wanted our wedding to have a modern flair and so while our color palate was black, white and gold with an accent of inky blue, we mixed modern patterns into the place setting and paper goods.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

The dress was a beaded Jenny Packham Gown that I bought at The Dress Theory in Seattle! I loved my experience at the Dress Theory; they made me feel so special throughout the whole process. James and I were engaged for 2 years and so I had plenty of time to gather inspiration for what kind of a gown I wanted before I even started shopping. I had seen some Jenny Packham gowns and was in awe of their shape and the beading. The closest stockist was the dress theory, and I had already heard from friends that they had beautiful, unique gowns. I would describe my personal style as more minimalist, and so I had originally envisioned a simple gown with maybe some lace, but as soon as I put on the dress I knew it was what I wanted for my wedding day. Another important factor was how easy it was to dance in!

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

We both have close friends and family of different genders. We didn’t let ourselves feel constrained when inviting people to be in our wedding party and it made it more of a community than separate parties. Our grandparents have been major influences in both of our lives, and even though they couldn’t all be at our wedding, two of our grandmas were our flower girls, lining the aisle with flower petals and joy.

Our dog, Moose, was only a few months old when we got married and sadly wasn’t able to make the trip with us to San Diego. We had a silhouette of her on our table numbers and we got a cardboard cutout of her likeness that people took photos with for our guestbook, and she also made appearances at our first look and on the dance floor.

We had our ceremony in the round, which meant we had a chance to look out at all those gathered with us, and they were able to see our faces throughout the ceremony.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

We loved reading our own vows to each other. We hadn’t initially planned on doing this, but it ended up being meaningful to declare our feelings for each other so publicly and using our own words.

One of the reasons we picked our venue was that we could stay there until midnight dancing outside. We’ll never forget dancing all night under a full moon, surrounding by all of the night lights of Balboa Park.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

We met in college, when we both led a Spring Break immersion trip to Tijuana, Mexico. Despite having an eye out for each other from the beginning, it wasn’t until after the second year of working together that we started to make moves! We dated long distance for a few years before moving to Seattle together when James started medical school. James spent a summer doing research in South Africa, and when Torrey decided to visit last minute James knew it would be the perfect time to propose. After flying almost 28 hours to get there, James proposed the day after Torrey arrived when they visited Cape Town’s Kirstenbosch Gardens.  To celebrate their engagement James surprised Torrey with a safari where they got to see numerous elephants–Torrey’s favorite animal!

Lisa and Lee’s wanted an intimate wedding, but the bride had never attended a small wedding and had a few reservations about it so she enlisted the expertise of Millie at Matthew Oliver Weddings and never looked back. Their big day was filled with beautiful surprises—including Il Salviatino, their Florentine Villa venue which they never even set eyes on prior to their wedding day! With complete trust in their planner, the couple celebrated on the meticulous historic grounds of the property with a garden ceremony and delightful courtyard reception. Fabulous garden floral arrangements are by Fluida Design with stationery by Meticulous Ink and menu by Papier. Lucky for us, Ben Yew Photography was on hand to capture the beautiful day in these stunning film images.

What made the wedding special and unique?

It was a mixture of so many things. We wanted a small intimate wedding but I had never been to a small wedding before – so I had some reservations of what it would be like. On the day it was perfect, utterly romantic, intimate & beautiful. This was due to a mixture of the venue, the setting and what our wedding planner, Millie, had put together, it was totally unique to us as a couple and captured the essence of our relationship. It couldn’t have been more perfect! What also made it unique was the fact we didn’t view the venue until our wedding day! I love surprises and I totally trusted Millie; everyone thought we were nuts, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made, other than marrying my husband!

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I found the gown at a shop called Tilly Mint in Fleet, Hampshire. It was the first gown I tried on and my Mum cried, I knew right then it was the one! I bought it that day without going to any other shops!

Art director and stylist My Sunday Afternoon combine bold, beautiful blues against softer, more organic floral and design elements to transform the modern space of Artists For Humanity EpiCenter into an artfully inspiring scene in this lovely editorial. Love and Thistle brought in beautifully loose florals, including magnolia buds that were just on the cusp of blooming and created masterpieces including the suspended piece that hung from the ceiling above the dining table to mimic a piece of art hanging in the gallery. Handmade invitations, velum name tags, and delicate calligraphy by Molly Grace Makes  completed the editorial. Hannah Cochran Photography acted as both creative director and photographer and her perfect vision can be seen in these stunning film images.

Aislinn and Jon’s wedding married multiple cultures and families living across the ocean from one another, so the couple figured if everyone was going to travel—make the destination one that everyone would want to vacation to. Enter Villa Medicea di Lilliano, a historic Tuscan villa overlooking the hills of wine country with a view of Florence in the distance. Event designer and coordinator, Super Tuscan Wedding Planners, brought in florist Flowers & Living to help create a stunning rooftop ceremony and Grey Collective member Art De Vie travelled with the couple from New Orleans to capture all the love and details in these beautiful images.

What made the wedding special and unique?

We decided on Italy as our destination wedding, since we were trying to marry multiple cultures and families living across the ocean from one another. We figured if we were making everyone travel, we should at least find a location people would want to come to. Our mutual favorite wine is also a Chianti Classico, so getting married in a Tuscan vineyard full of such wines was a dream! We didn’t have the opportunity to travel to Italy before the wedding, so we had to land on a venue and make all associated decisions without ever visiting the Villa in person. That made the revealing of the grounds the day before the wedding extra special! We were blown away by the beauty of it all – the pictures we had seen online really didn’t do the Villa justice. The aspect of our wedding most unique to us was that we had people from 7 countries and 6 different states – most of whom didn’t know each other before the wedding – come together and connect as if they were all old friends. Most of the members of our families (with the exception of our parents) had also never met beforehand, so it was quite special to see how well the group meshed and how much fun everyone had together.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

It was a Martina Liana fit and flare gown with a high neckline, sheer back with delicate lace details and pearl buttons. The dress had several layers to it, with ivory embroidered lace and stone tulle over a moscato-color gown and porcelain tulle illusion. I found it at Town and Country in New Orleans the week my parents came to visit for Thanksgiving from the Netherlands. It was the first time they met Jon’s parents, and I wanted to have at least one opportunity to go dress shopping together with my mother, and Jon’s mother and sister – so it was quite meaningful that I was able to find THE dress during the one day I had everyone with me!

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

We determined early on that we wanted someone we knew to perform our ceremony, and eventually decided to ask Aislinn’s Irish uncle who was also coincidentally an honorary Senator of the state of Louisiana – neatly representing both the Irish heritage of the bride and the Louisiana heritage of the groom! We tried to incorporate various elements from our different cultures in the wedding. We decided on a sit-down dinner in keeping with most European traditions, but we treated the speeches during dinner as most Southerners do the night before at the rehearsal – anyone who wanted to speak was invited to stand up and say a few words. Since our wedding was quite small (56 people), it made it very personal to get to hear from some of our dearest friends and family, without feeling like we had to limit the speech time. The party afterwards too incorporated both European and Southern elements – the dancing went on until 1:30 in the morning with your typical wedding music, interspersed with Irish tap dancing, Dutch folk songs, and the LSU Tigers marching band anthem. Our party favors were both a memento from the region (local olive oil and Limoncello), as well as Mardi Gras beads we had brought over from our home in New Orleans. We truly tried to mesh our separate backgrounds and experiences, making the wedding feel like it was anything but standard.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Walking up the stairs to the rooftop terrace overlooking Tuscan wine country – and in the distance, Florence – where everyone was gathered for the ceremony. While the surroundings were unquestionably stunning, the only thing Aislinn remembers seeing as she walked down the aisle was Jon’s emotional face, and that she couldn’t stop the sudden onslaught of tears. It was a very touching moment because it just felt so surreal to be in the midst of that gorgeous environment, getting to say ‘I do” to each other, surrounded by so many of our favorite people who had traveled such a great distance to be there with us.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

We met at Aislinn’s work, where Jon would regularly come to visit clients. Aislinn was sitting in her friend Mary’s office when Jon walked in to discuss matters of business with Mary. Before long, the conversation took a personal turn, and Aislinn wanted to know where Jon was from. He thought the answer of ‘north Louisiana’ was self-evident enough, but when Aislinn thought that meant somewhere near Kentwood (the home of Brittney Spears – which, as a newcomer to Louisiana, was really the only place outside of New Orleans that Aislinn was familiar with), Jon decided to draw a map on the whiteboard and explain the geography of Louisiana to the poor ignorant foreigner. He was, in fact, from a town nowhere near Kentwood. Mary – who would later be the Matron of Honor at our wedding – shrewdly observed the chemistry between us in those short 45 minutes, and quietly conspired with a friend of Jon’s to set us up on a group date. That group date ended in everyone else leaving well before midnight, and the two of us staying out together until 2 a.m. (on a Monday evening). We became engaged 2 years later while on vacation on the Greek island of Santorini. Jon proposed on the balcony of our room, with a bottle of wine, overlooking the Aegean sea. We then went out to celebrate and ended up partying with the locals until 6 a.m. We may have missed the vineyard tour we had planned for the next day, but it was worth it!
